Investment Markets Overview – w/e 1 March 2013

Heck, what a busy week. The Pope went on permanent gardening leave, the first to do so in 600 years, whilst the Italians gave the “finger” to the Eurocrats, kicking out the EU appointed Super Mario Monti at this weeks elections, leaving a choice between parties led by a comedian, a former communist and a convict to form a coalition government, not forgetting four times leader, Silvio Berlusconi. Berlusconi, who is fighting a tax-fraud conviction and charges of paying a minor for sex, has campaigned against the austerity measures introduced by Monti, as has the former comedian, Beppe Grillo. Between them they won 55% of the popular vote. What politicians across Europe, the UK and the US have failed to do, post financial crisis, is to match tax increases with “spending cuts,” a recipe for unfairness and opening the way for social unrest and populism. Talking of spending cuts, the Obama administration was dragged screaming and kicking this week into the “sequester,” a fancy name for spending cuts. More on this below.
