Investment Markets Overview – w/e 29 November 2013

As geo-political tensions abate over Iran’s nuclear ambitions, they escalate once more in Asia, particularly between Asia’s largest economies, China and Japan, as China’s newly announced air defence zone in the East China Sea sparked protests from Japan, South Korea and, for good measure, the US, who took the opportunity to remind China of their “air muscle.” As China’s military expands, the new zone requires aircraft, including those of Japan, to report flights and identify themselves and overlaps with Japan’s own existing zone which includes the disputed Senkaku islands. With both economies running Debt/GDP ratios in excess of 200%, the risk of damaging a much needed resurgence in trade may increase as Japan is set to announce a 10-year defence plan next month.
