Investment Markets Overview — W/E 28th August 2015

We reminded last week of the importance of the 3500 level in respect of the Shanghai stock-index, the SH Comp, saying that as it had closed last Friday at 3507 we may see a literal scrum in respect of the exit doors in China next week. Well, a scrum was an understatement as the 3500 support was breeched in early Monday trading, when it promptly collapsed by 19% to a mid-week low of 2850, before recovering part of the losses by week’s close at 3232 for a more modest 8% weekly fall. Meanwhile, volatility was the name of the game in respect of all Global financial asset-classes, be they stocks, bonds, commodities or currencies, as investors’ battled to second guess the ever increasing market intervention/manipulations by the world’s central bankers, presumably with the full knowledge and support of their political masters? We cover these asset-classes in more detail below, in addition to the week’s main economic data released but readers may be interest to peruse our latest blog post, “After the Bounce.”
