Investment Markets Overview — W/E 2nd October 2015

The Global mood turned darker this week, as evidenced by the tone of global stocks, which had a very volatile week as liquidity contracted. If one had to look for a mood-change catalyst, there were plenty to choose from, ranging from the widening VW emissions scandal or the failed talks over Syria between Obama and Putin at the 70th anniversary gathering of the United Nations, where the latter wasted little time in joining the growing crowd of Countries bombing the country. The Catalan separatists’ scored a decent enough regional election result to step ever closer to independence, whilst the markets had enough worries of their own to ensure uncertainty. Commodity giant Glencore PLC took a 30% hit on Monday on fresh worries about the company’s debt as global trade slows, led by China, whilst liquidity concerns and falling US earnings placed a question mark over American corporate ability to service the increased debt levels acquired to enable share-buybacks. The “proverbial straw” for the week were the disappointing non-farm payrolls announced on Friday, which saw a net fall of 59,000 private sector jobs over a two-month period and concerns over average wages.
