Investment Markets Overview — W/E 4th December 2015

A new World heavy-weight boxing champion was crowned last week-end as the 6ft 9in Tyson Fury, who is of Irish-Gypsy heritage and comes from a bloodline of bare-knuckle champions on both sides of his family, ended Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko’s 9-year reign. Anyone trading the financial markets this week could be forgiven for feeling as if they had climbed out of the same boxing-ring, battered and bruised. It was extremely volatile for all asset-classes, as market participants’ bought into the expectation that ECB President Draghi would announce more stimuli, aka QE, at the central bank’s monetary policy meeting. In the event Herr Draghi disappointed by announcing no immediate increase in QE, albeit that he did extend the current €60BN monthly “fix” from the initial end-date of September 2016 by six months to March 2017 (and forever if needed!) He also announced a further cut in the ECB’s deposit rate to -0.3%, a record low, but this was insufficient to satisfy the “credit junkies,” as stocks sold off, with volatility surging by 20%, accompanied by higher “market” interest rates, a reversal in the $/€ trend of late and a further sell-off for the price of Oil and other commodities, albeit the precious-metal variety spiked higher on the uncertainty of it all. There is more on the various asset classes below.
